Step Statewide Student Research Poster Competition and the
Long Island STEM Diversity Summit Student Research Poster

A Suffolk County Community College’s
(SCCC) STEP student’s research poster and accompanying
oral presentation was well received at the 2016 Step Statewide
Student Research Poster Competition (March 18-20, 2016, Albany,
NY) and the Long Island STEM Diversity Summit Student Research
Poster Competition (April 1, 2016 Farmingdale State College).
Paola Henriquez (11th grade, Brentwood High School), participated
in the STEP poster research competition, Biological Sciences
– Senior Division, for her project, The Comparison of
the Efficiency of Different Commercial Mouthwashes on Oral
Bacteria. Paola was awarded third place at the Long Island
STEM Diversity Summit.This research explored using competing
mouthwashes, more specifically those that contained essential
oils. Paola was mentored by SCCC Professor Adriana Pinkas-Sarafova,
Ph.D. (Biology).
