College Engineering Science CSTEP Student was Awarded the
Joseph H. Smith Jr. ’45 Engineering & Science Medal

Mohawk Valley Community College Engineering Science major
Monica Jackson, of Utica, has been awarded the Joseph H. Smith
Jr. ’45 Engineering & Science Medal from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute.
The award, which honors students for excellence in engineering
and math, comes with a transfer scholarship for $18,000 per
year for two years of her transfer education at RPI, where
Jackson plans to major in Civil Engineering after her graduation
from MVCC in May.
Jackson, a graduate of Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica,
has received many other honors during her time at MVCC, including
the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges
(NYSMATYC)’s Award for Excellence in Mathematics, the
MVCC Professional Association Scholarship, the SUNY Empire
State Diversity Scholarship (Fall 2016), the David Mathis
Minority Scholarship, the David and Virginia Ward Scholarship,
the Auxiliary Services Corporation Student Leadership Scholarship,
and the Susan Q. Chapin Memorial Scholarship.
Jackson also has been very involved on campus while at MVCC,
as a member of the Future Engineers Club, C-STEP (Collegiate
Science and Technology Entry Program), Math Club, and the
Phi Theta Kappa international honor society for two-year colleges.
She also spent time helping her fellow students as a math
tutor in the MVCC Learning Commons.
