Clarkson University Students Honored at Statewide Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program Conference

April 2014, Albany, New York

Three Clarkson University CUPO (Community of Underrepresented Professional Opportunities) students recently received awards at the 22nd annual statewide Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Student Conference: Journeys Beyond Excellence.

Kevin Cave, a junior electrical engineering major from Brooklyn, N.Y., received second place in the engineering division for his poster "Speaker Recognition at a Distance.” He was mentored by Prof. Stephanie A. Schuckers and Prof. Joseph D. Skufca.

Cleann Davis, a senior psychology major from Rochester, N.Y., was awarded second place for her poster presentation in the psychology division on "The Role of Emotional Acceptance in the link between Motivation and self-regulation." She was mentored by Prof. Lisa Legault.

Peter Vaillancourt, a senior math and physics major from Rochester, N.Y., was awarded second place for his oral presentation in the physical sciences division on "Modeling a Radial Velocity Distribution of Galaxy Clusters." He was mentored by Prof. Joshua Thomas.

In all, eleven Clarkson University students from the CSTEP program attended the conference.

The other poster presentations were by Michelle Morales, a senior psychology major from Los Angeles, Calif.; and Jahlil Mitchell, a junior psychology major from Brooklyn, N.Y.

The other oral presentation was by Masoud Siddiqi, a senior mechanical engineering major from Potsdam, N.Y.

Richard Brown, a freshman mechanical engineering major from New York, N.Y., served as a student ambassador at the conference.

Other students in attendance were Sudeep Adhikari, a senior mechanical engineering major from Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; Roseley Infante, a senior ARETE (liberal arts and business) student from Brooklyn, N.Y.; Anthony Yang, a sophomore chemical engineering student from Massena, N.Y.; and Qiaoling Zeng, a sophomore electrical engineering major from Brooklyn, N.Y.

Chemistry & Bimolecular Science Research Associate & Adjunct Instructor Halimatu S. Mohammed, a Clarkson CUPO alumna, served as a poster presentation judge in the biology division.
